Position: School Social Worker

Reports to: Supervisor of School Counseling and Mental Health / Director of Special Education and Student Services
Salary: Unit 1 Salary Scale - Dependent upon degree and experience
Overview
The School Social Worker serves as a certified clinical mental health specialist and a vital component of the school-based student services team. This role involves delivering preventative care, clinical interventions, and mental health supports to eliminate academic and environmental obstacles while fostering social-emotional and behavioral achievement. Operating within the MTSS framework, the School Social Worker acts as the lead practitioner for comprehensive case management, family-school partnership strengthening, and the coordination of community resources for students from Pre-K through graduation.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited institution;
- Current Maryland licensure as a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW-C/LMSW) or Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW/LCSW-C);
- Eligible for or holds Maryland State Department of Education certification;
- Demonstrated knowledge of child and adolescent development, trauma-informed practices, behavioral health, and family systems;
- Experience in case management, wraparound services, community collaboration, and school-based mental health preferred; and
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, consultation skills, and collaboration skills.
Essential Job Functions
- Deliver Tier 2 and Tier 3 mental health interventions including leading groups that support students and reduce barriers to school success, including attendance;
- Coordinate physical, behavioral, and mental health services including wraparound services;
- Initiate and manage referrals, facilitate communication, and coordinate services among community agencies and families;
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgement;
- Monitor services and evaluate progress toward identified goals;
- Develop collaborative partnerships with parents and the school community;
- Facilitate parent education and support activities.
- Support interventions that improve attendance, engagement, and school connectedness;
- Collaborate with school teams such as PST, IEP, 504 to fully support students;
- Coordinate reintegration planning for students returning from hospitalization, residential placement, or extended absence due to behavioral or mental health needs;
- Maintain professional licensure and complete required professional development;
- Collect and analyze data to evaluate intervention effectiveness and support continuous program improvement; and
- Attend required meetings, training, and professional learning opportunities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supporting students and families to reduce barriers to learning and school success;
- Maintaining knowledge of MTSS and school mental health systems;
- Providing trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices;
- Understanding and facilitating Restorative Practices strategies;
- Facilitating crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies;
- Communicating knowledge of community resources and behavioral health systems; and
- Performing other duties as assigned to ensure the success of students.
