POSITION:           Elementary Literacy Coach

DEPARTMENT:     Instruction

SALARY:               Unit I Salary Schedule (190 days)

LOCATION:           Multiple Elementary Schools

 

DESCRIPTION

 

The Literacy Coach will serve to increase success for teachers and students through intentional cycles that inform instructional decisions and inspire a growth mindset, while supporting the ACPS literacy vision based on the principles of the science of reading research.. The Literacy coach will conduct focused and structured conversations, with clear and honest feedback based on classroom visits and learning walks to support teachers. The Literacy Coach will provide supports inclusive of opportunities for teacher and administrator instructional reflections, professional development/growth, collaboration, and modeling of effective practices that will foster student achievement. Literacy Coaches work with teachers and/or grade level groups on structures designed to improve instruction and promote student growth. 

 

POSITION GOAL 

 

Literacy Coaches will strengthen teachers’ efficacy with classroom teaching practices by engaging in intentional cycles of learning, classroom visitation, and targeted support, thus allowing all educators to uphold our literacy vision. 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Plan and implement professional learning opportunities based on analysis of student performance indicators and aligned with current research
  2. Guide teachers to collect and analyze data and develop action plans in response to determined student needs
  3. Demonstrate and model best practices through large group, small group, or one-on-one activities 
  4. Coach instructional staff, which includes pre-conferencing with teachers, observing teachers, structuring activities with teachers designed to enhance instructional delivery in the classroom, and post-conferencing with teachers using reflection and questioning 
  5. Assist the Principal by helping to coordinate the school’s screening, use of diagnostic tools, progress monitoring, and outcome assessment program 
  6. Participate in district-sponsored activities that include developing professional learning designed to enhance the coaching model and regular coaching meetings
  7. Complete coaching logs and reports to inform coaching impact
  8. Participate fully in professional learning opportunities and professional research and reading 
  9. Display outstanding presentation and facilitation skills 
  10. Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in the areas of communication, problem-solving, conflict management, collaboration
  11. Possess strong organizational skills and ability to multitask

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Post-graduate coursework in Literacy or 10 years experience teaching research-based literacy instruction

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Possess a deep knowledge of reading, writing and literacy development
  2. Training and experience implementing the Science of Reading practices
  3. Training in foundational reading intervention programs, including multi-sensory methods.
  4. Successful experience with core reading programs at the elementary level
  5. Knowledge and experience in implementation of the Multi-tiered Systems of Support for reading instruction.
